I thought that Jesse Miller’s visit to class was interesting and intriguing. I was engaged with most of the content and it made me think of how my online presence should be evaluated. I googled myself right before this class and nothing actually came up in terms of ME. Lots came up for other Shona Thompson’s however. This ranged from a romance author to a massage therapist to an actress. I also googled my nicknames and I did not come up there either. I even tried my specific Instagram handle, which I do not think students can find anyways as it does not go by my actual name, and nothing again.
My focus for the inquiry in EDCI 250 focuses on making connections with students while understanding what boundaries should be in place. Due to this, Jesse’s section on professional responsibilities was really helpful. Some points I made in my notebook were
- at what point do you cross a professional boundary?
- social professional vs. social personal
- like the difference especially for social media.
- create two different accounts if you must post teacher content, otherwise keep it all on a PRIVATE personal account
- remove Wi-Fi from phone when at school because school can track your phone activity like snapchat and bandwidth reasons
Overall, the discussion that occurred around this was interesting. I’m glad we were able to have this experience with the guest speaker.
